今回はアメリカのロサンゼルスの野球チーム、エンゼルスとドジャースです。

エンゼルスで大活躍中の大谷翔平さんですが、MLB（メジャーリーグ）やプロ野球界隈で話題の「大谷さんの今後」も気になりますよね！

大谷翔平選手は「そのままエンゼルス」と「ドジャース移籍」のほぼ二択との噂もありますが、この機会に両チームについてざっくり日本語と英語で解説したいと思います。

エンゼルスの由来は？

ロサンゼルス・エンゼルスという球団名は、ロサンゼルスの地名の由来である「天使たち = the angels」。

ロサンゼルスという地名は、スペイン語で「天使たち」を意味します。

1781年にこの土地に入植した人々が町の名を「我らが貴婦人、ポルツィウンコラの天使たちの女王の町」を意味する El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúnculaと名づけ、それが縮まったものであると言われています。

The name of the Los Angeles Angels baseball team is derived from the place name Los Angeles, ‘the angels’.

The name Los Angeles means ‘the angels’ in Spanish.

In 1781, settlers in the area named the town El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula, meaning “Our Lady, Queen of the Angels of Porciúncula”, which is said to have been a contraction of the name.

エンゼルスの歴史

エンゼルスは、1961年にアメリカンリーグ（MLBを構成する2つのリーグの一つ）の新球団として誕生しました。

最初のシーズンはロサンゼルス・リグレー・フィールドを、翌年から1965年まではドジャースの本拠地であるドジャー・スタジアムを本拠地としていました。

1966年にアナハイムに移転し、カリフォルニア・エンゼルスと改名します。

その後、1997年にアナハイム・エンゼルス、2005年にロサンゼルス・エンゼルス・オブ・アナハイム、2016年にロサンゼルス・エンゼルスと何度も名称を変えました。

エンゼルスは、1979年に初めて地区優勝を果たしましたが、リーグチャンピオンシップシリーズでオリオールズに敗れます。

その後、1982年、1986年、2004年、2005年、2007年、2008年、2009年、2014年と地区優勝を繰り返しましたが、リーグ優勝はできませんでした。

唯一のワールドシリーズ出場と優勝は、2002年のことでした。

ワイルドカードでポストシーズンに進出したエンゼルスは、ディビジョンシリーズでヤンキースを破り、チャンピオンシップシリーズではツインズを下します。

そしてワールドシリーズではジャイアンツと対戦し、3勝4敗で逆転優勝を飾りました。

現在も西地区に所属するエンゼルスは、マイク・トラウトや大谷翔平などの人気選手を擁していますが、2014年以降はポストシーズン進出がなくなっています。

The Angels were created in 1961 as a new team in the American League (one of the two leagues that make up MLB).

For its first season, the team played at Los Angeles Wrigley Field, and from the following year until 1965 at Dodger Stadium, home of the Dodgers.

In 1966, the team moved to Anaheim and changed its name to the California Angels.

The name was subsequently changed several times: to the Anaheim Angels in 1997, to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005 and to the Los Angeles Angels in 2016.

The Angels won their first district championship in 1979, but lost to the Orioles in the League Championship Series.

They went on to repeat as district champions in 1982, 1986, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2014, but failed to win the league championship.

Their only World Series appearance and championship came in 2002.

After making it to the post-season as a wild card team, the Angels defeated the Yankees in the Division Series and the Twins in the Championship Series.

They then faced the Giants in the World Series, winning 3-4 in a come-from-behind victory.

The Angels, who still belong to the West Division, have popular players such as Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, but have not made the post-season since 2014.

エンゼルスのライバルチームは？

エンゼルスは、同じロサンゼルス地域を本拠地とするドジャースと毎年対戦します。

これは「フリーウェイ・シリーズ」と呼ばれ、ヤンキースとメッツの「サブウェイ・シリーズ」のようにファンの間でも毎回盛り上がっているようですね。

ドジャースはナショナルリーグ西地区のチーム。
エンゼルスとはリーグが異なるので、ポストシーズンでの対戦はワールドシリーズに限られるものの、その可能性も近年高まっています。

またエンゼルスは、同じアメリカンリーグ西地区に所属するチームとは年間19試合ずつ対戦するので、その中にはライバル関係にあるチームが多くありますね。

特に近年強豪として君臨しているアストロズや、テキサス州を本拠地とするレンジャーズとは熾烈なゲーム（試合）を繰り広げています。

The Angels play the Dodgers, who also call the Los Angeles area home, every year.

This is known as the ‘Freeway Series’ and, like the ‘Subway Series’ between the Yankees and Mets, is a fan favourite.

The Dodgers are a National League West team and are in a different league to the Angels, so their post-season match-up is limited to the World Series, although that possibility has increased in recent years.

The Angels also play 19 games a year against teams in the same American League West division, many of which are rivalries.

In particular, they are in fierce competition with the Astros, who have reigned as a powerhouse in recent years, and the Texas-based Rangers.

しかし、1957年に球団オーナーのウォルター・オマリーが西海岸の市場に目をつけ、ロサンゼルスに本拠地を移転することを決めました。

ロサンゼルス・ドジャースとなった1958年からは、ドジャー・スタジアムを新本拠地とし、サンディ・コーファックスやドン・ドライスデールなどの名投手やトミー・ラソーダ監督の下で1960年代から1980年代にかけてワールドシリーズで5回優勝します。

その後は低迷期が続きましたが、2010年代から再び強豪として復活し、2020年には32年ぶりのワールドシリーズ優勝を達成しました。

The Dodgers baseball team was founded in Brooklyn in 1883 and initially changed its name variously to the Atlantics, the Graces, the Bridegrooms and the Superbas.

The name Dodgers derives from the nickname of the streetcar dodgers (trolley dodgers) in the 1890s.

The Dodgers moved to Ebbets Field in 1913, and in 1947 they used Jackie Robinson as the first black player in Major League Baseball.

In 1955, the team won its first championship, defeating the New York Yankees in the World Series.

However, in 1957, team owner Walter O’Malley spotted the West Coast market and decided to move the team to Los Angeles.

The team became the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958, with Dodger Stadium as its new home, and won five World Series titles between the 1960s and 1980s under great pitchers such as Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale and manager Tommy Lasorda.

A period of stagnation followed, but the team returned as a powerhouse in the 2010s and won its first World Series title in 32 years in 2020.
