Introducing Shohei Otani in English
Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese professional baseball player who plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball aka MLB.
He is both a pitcher and a hitter and has been called the first ever two-way star. He won the American League Player of the Year award in 2021.
Shohei Ohtani was born on 5 July 1994 in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. He was drafted by the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in 2012.
He played in Japan for five years, winning the Best Player and Most Winning Pitchers awards in 2016.
Los Angeles Angels, MLB
In 2017, Ohtani moved to Major League Baseball and signed with the Los Angeles Angels. He wanted to play in the major leagues in a dual role, which the Angels accepted.
However, he was plagued by breakdowns and underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in 2018. As a result, he could hardly pitch in 2019 and 2020.
In 2021, Ohtani made a full recovery and had a phenomenal record in both pitching and hitting. He hit 46 homers, drove in 103 runs, stole 26 bases and posted a .965 OPS.
He also went 9-2 with a 3.18 goals-against average and 156 strikeouts.
Besides, Ohtani played in the All-Star Game, serving as starting pitcher and lead-off hitter. He won the American League Most Valuable Player Award by a landslide vote.

He took on the difficult challenge of playing NitohRyu two-way style and succeeded.
Shohei Ohtani is called “The Unicorn” and admired by fans all over the world.
He will continue to lead the baseball world.

大谷翔平は、日本では北海道の日ハムファイターズのプロ野球選手でおなじみでしたね。
アメリカのメジャーリーグベースボール（MLB）では、ロサンゼルスのエンゼルス（Los Angeles Angels）から、2023年12月、同じくロサンゼルスのドジャース（Dodgers）にFA移籍しました。
彼は投手と打者の二刀流でプレーしており、前例のない大活躍を続けています。
2021年にアメリカンリーグの最優秀選手賞を受賞しました。
大谷翔平は1994年7月5日に岩手県花巻市で生まれました。
高校時代には甲子園に出場し、最速160キロの速球と強力な打撃で注目を集めています。

日本ハムでは5年間プレーし、2016年には最優秀選手賞と最多勝利投手賞を獲得しました。

メジャーリーグデビュー
2017年に大谷翔平はついにアメリカのメジャーリーグベースボールに移籍し、ロサンゼルス・エンゼルスと契約しました。
彼はメジャーリーグでも二刀流でプレーすることを希望し、エンゼルスは快諾しました。
不運にも彼は故障に悩まされ、2018年に右肘のトミー・ジョン手術を受けることになります。
そのため、2019年と2020年はほとんど投げることができませんでした。
しかし2021年には完全復活を果たし、投打の二刀流で驚異的な成績を叩き出しています。
大谷翔平はトミー・ジョン手術を受けることでより速く､より強く､より正確なプレーのできる選手に進化したのです。
その年に彼は46本塁打、103打点、26盗塁、.965のOPSを記録。
また、9勝2敗、3.18の防御率、156奪三振を挙げました。
さらに大谷翔平はオールスターゲームにも出場し、先発投手と先頭打者を務めています。
そしてアメリカンリーグの最優秀選手賞を圧倒的な票差で獲得しました。

トミー・ジョン手術とは？
トミー・ジョン手術とは、肘の内側側副靭帯が断裂した場合に行われる手術です。
この手術は、1974年にアメリカのフランク・ジョーブ医師によって考案され、最初に受けた投手のトミー・ジョンに因んで（ちなんで）名付けられました。
野球の投手に多い手術で、野球以外ではやり投げなどの競技者も受けることがあります。
具体的には「損傷した靭帯を切除し、患者の反対側の腕や下腿などから正常な腱を摘出して移植する」ことで、靭帯の再建を目指すという手術です。
移植した腱が靭帯として定着するまでには時間がかかるため、術後には長期にわたるリハビリが必要。
通常、復帰までには12か月から15か月、故障前と同じレベルになるには18か月ほどかかると言われています。
手術の成功率は、メジャーリーグベースボール（MLB）傘下の投手を対象にした調査では83％がメジャーに復帰し、97％が実戦復帰を果たしたというデータがあります。
とはいえ復帰後に10試合以上登板できる確率は70％ほどと低く、完治とは言い難い状況ではあります。
また日本人選手の場合は細胞の組成速度が違うため、より時間的な猶予（ゆうよ）を必要とするという意見も聞かれますね。
これまでにトミー・ジョン手術を受けた日本人選手はけっこういて、代表的な選手としては村田兆治、桑田真澄、松坂大輔、ダルビッシュ有が挙げられます。
村田兆治は1983年に手術を受けて3年後に17勝を挙げ、桑田真澄は1995年に手術を受け、復帰後に最高勝率や最優秀防御率を獲得しました。

なお、大谷翔平が2023年秋に受けた右肘の靭帯再建手術は、また別の新しい方法の手術となっており、将来的に「ショウヘイ・オオタニ手術」と呼ばれるようになるかもしれません。
What is Tommy John surgery?
Tommy John surgery is a procedure performed when the medial collateral ligament of the elbow is torn.
The procedure was devised by Dr Frank Jobe in the USA in 1974 and named after Tommy John, the first pitcher to undergo the procedure.
The surgery is most commonly performed on baseball pitchers, and outside of baseball, competitors such as javelin throwers may also undergo the procedure.
Specifically, the damaged ligament is removed and a normal tendon is removed from the patient’s opposite arm or lower leg and transplanted to reconstruct the ligament.
As it takes time for the transplanted tendon to settle as a ligament, a prolonged period of rehabilitation is required after surgery.
It usually takes 12 to 15 months to return to work and 18 months to return to the same level as before the injury.
The success rate of surgery is based on a survey of pitchers under the Major League Baseball (MLB) umbrella, which showed that 83% returned to the majors and 97% returned to actual competition.
However, the probability of being able to pitch in 10 or more games after returning is as low as 70%, so it is difficult to say that a complete recovery has been achieved.
There is also an opinion that Japanese players need more time because of the different cellular composition rate.
Many Japanese athletes have undergone Tommy John surgery, but some of the best known are Choji Murata, Masumi Kuwata, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Yu Darvish.
Choji Murata had the operation in 1983 and won 17 games three years later, while Masumi Kuwata had the operation in 1995 and won the highest winning percentage and best defence percentage after his return.
