Japan’s well worth the journey — but it does rather depend on why you’re going. Flea markets you can lose yourself in, towns that never made the guidebooks, a good natter with a local collector over a can of canned coffee — that’s all very much worth coming for. But if you’re travelling purely to get your hands on something specific, do yourself a favour and check Mercari first.

But the reality of hunting for something specific is a bit like digging for treasure on a desert island with no map. One shop, a hundred thousand items, and your 1989 Choshu Riki signed programme could be absolutely anywhere.

Mercari is Japan’s largest secondhand marketplace — your magic map, if you will. Type in a keyword and within seconds you’ve got listings from sellers all across the country. Not just one shop in Tokyo, but attics and storage rooms from Sapporo down to Kagoshima. The table above tells the story rather well.
でも、海外から直接使えないんじゃないの？
実はここ、少し注意が必要です。正直にお伝えしますね。
日本版メルカリ（Mercari JP）は、海外からの直接利用を公式にはサポートしていません。
海外からアクセスするとログインできなかったり、画面が制限されたりすることがあります。
でも、ご安心ください。ちゃんと方法があります。
A fair point, and worth being upfront about — Mercari JP doesn’t officially support accounts from outside Japan. You may find the app won’t cooperate if you try to log in from abroad. That said, there are perfectly good workarounds, and one of them is frankly excellent.
