日本と時差がないのも嬉しいですよね！
そんなパラオには、どんな車が走っているのでしょうか？
昔から日本とパラオは兄弟のような関係がずっと続いていて、貿易の交流も盛んです。
実はパラオには、日本の車がたくさん走っているんです。
車通りの多い道周辺の駐車場を見ると、ぱっと見「ここ日本かな？」と思うくらいです。

パラオのクルマ事情
人口約2万人の小ぢんまりとした島国パラオでは、陸に電車のような公共交通機関がありません。
地元の方の交通手段は自動車もしくは自転車・バイクがメインとなっており、基本的に車社会です。旅行者の方はタクシーやレンタカー、シャトルバスなどをりようすることになります。
パラオで走っている車の95％位はトヨタやホンダや日産などの日本車で、懐かしい感じの中古車がほとんど。
なので、あなたが以前乗っていた愛車がしれっと船便で輸出されて、パラオで走っている可能性は十分にあります！
もしパラオに行った時にそのクルマと再会できたら、最高ですよね。
交通ルール的にはアメリカと同じく右側通行で、日本と逆になります。
そのため右ハンドル仕様のクルマはかなり違和感がありそうですが、パラオのみなさんはすっかり慣れっ子なのか、普通に道を走っていました。
また最近では、新しい感じの日本車以外の車もちょっと増えてきているようです。
中古の日本車は部品不足！？
とはいえまだまだ日本車だらけのパラオ。
パラオではクルマの年式が古くなるにつれて故障が増える反面、徐々に部品が輸入されなくなるので、部品不足で困っている側面もあります。
その裏には悲しいことに、日本でクルマの部品がどんどん値上げされていって、最終的に製造中止になってしまうという事情があるんですよね。
そしてパラオには、日本から中古車を輸入する際に留意すべきポイントとして輸入規則、規制、方針、文書、関税および税金、検査、制限などに関連するクリア必須の項目があります。
パラオの輸入規制によると、パラオに輸入された品目または車両には3％の関税が支払われるようですね。
古い車ほど、純正の部品は諦めた方がいいということになりそうです。
アメリカの場合
ちなみにアメリカでは、右ハンドルのクルマは基本的に取り扱っていません。
国土が広いし人口が多いし道路が複雑なので、左ハンドルじゃないと危ないんでしょうね。
例外として、製造から25年以上を経たクルマはクラシックカー（ビンテージ）扱いで輸入しているそうです。

ナンバープレートがない！？
パラオの車を観察していると、ナンバープレートがない車が走っていることに気づくと思います。
パラオでは、ナンバープレートは後ろについてるだけで良いらしく、前にはつけずに走っているんですね。
平和で温厚なお国柄がこの辺りからも感じ取れます。

パラオでの運転に必要なものは？
パラオでの運転には、日本の運転免許証が有効です。
でもパラオでは、アメリカと同じく右側通行です。
ここは日本みたいにうっかり左側通行しないように要注意ですね！
パラオで運転する際はシートベルトの着用も忘れず、ご安全に。

The car environment in Palau
In Palau, a small island country with a population of approximately 20,000, there is no public transport such as trains on land, so cars are the main means of transport, and the country is basically a vehicle-oriented society.
About 95% of the cars on the road in Palau are Japanese cars such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan, and most of them are used cars with a nostalgic appearance.
So there is a good chance that your former beloved car you used to drive has been exported and is running in Palau!
It would be great if you could be reunited with that car when you visit Palau.
Recently, there has also been a slight increase in the number of new-looking non-Japanese cars.
Palau has a set of mandatory clearances relating to import rules, regulations, policies, documentation, duties and taxes, inspections and restrictions as points to keep in mind when importing used vehicles from Japan.
According to Palau’s import regulations, a 3% duty is likely to be paid on any item or vehicle imported into Palau.
As the vehicles get older, parts are no longer imported, so there seems to be a shortage of parts for some parts.
There’s a situation there, sadly, where parts keep getting overpriced in Japan and are eventually discontinued.
No number plates!?
If you observe cars in Palau, you will notice that there are cars without number plates on the road.
In Palau, it seems that number plates are only required to be on the back of the car and not on the front.
You can sense the peaceful nature of the country in this area.

What do I need to drive in Palau?
A Japanese driver’s licence is valid for driving in Palau.
But in Palau, like in the USA, you drive on the right side of the road.
Be careful not to drive on the left side of the road here by accident, like in Japan!
When driving in Palau, remember to wear your seatbelt and be safe.
